Coping with Grief & Loss

Many people are experiencing grief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Grief is a normal response to a loss during or after a traumatic event. Grief can happen in response to a loss of life, as well as to drastic changes in daily routines and ways of life that usually bring us comfort and a feeling of stability.

Some people may experience multiple losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. You might be unable to be with a loved one when they die, or unable to mourn someone’s death in person with friends and family.

Some actions you can take to help you cope with feelings of grief after the loss of a loved one include:

  • It may feel like the sadness and pain will never go away, but in most cases, grief eases over time. The intensity of grief usually correlates with the intensity of love that they felt for the person when they were alive.

  • Acknowledge that losing a family member or friend is a very difficult situation that can trigger many different feelings. All these feelings are natural and there is no right or wrong way to feel or process grief.

  • Remember the happy moments and memories of time spent with the deceased person. Create a memory keepsake or ritual to remember your loved one. Take part in an activity that has special significance to you to honor them.

  • Speak regularly about how you are feeling with people whom you trust. Reach out to friends, family, or community resources who can help with the grieving process and help you feel connected. You and your family have access to support through EAP 24/7, at no cost to you and it is 100% confidential.

  • Focus on activities that are enjoyable and make you feel happy.
